Serving Up Support: Why I Started a Veteran-Owned Coffee Company as a Registered Nurse

I didn’t start Bilge Brew to “build a brand.” I started it because I was tired of coffee that tasted burnt and companies that sold hype instead of a product. I wanted coffee that shows up the way real people do: early, consistent, and ready to work.

About the ownerShop all roastsWhat “veteran-owned” actually means

Quick summary (read this if you’re in a hurry)

  • Who I am: Navy veteran + registered nurse.
  • Why Bilge Brew exists: dependable coffee for long shifts and early mornings—no gimmicks.
  • How we run it: clear standards, real customer support, and transparency about online fulfillment.
  • Where to start: one bold espresso, one daily drip, or a sampler if you don’t want to guess.

The work before the coffee company

I didn’t wake up one day and decide to “be a coffee entrepreneur.” I worked real jobs: movie theater concessions, AT&T, restaurant shifts, Starbucks, car sales. Then the Navy taught me discipline, teamwork, and ownership. After the military, I moved through hiring/HR and into healthcare—CNA to RN—and kept going from there.

Across every one of those lanes, coffee was the constant: quick cups between tasks, a ritual after a long stretch, and a small win when everything else was chaos.

What the Navy taught me (and what most brands get wrong)

The Navy doesn’t reward “vibes.” It rewards standards. You do the work. You check it. You do it again tomorrow.

That mindset is why Bilge Brew sounds different than most coffee marketing. We’re not here to entertain you with clever packaging and empty claims. We’re here to deliver a cup that tastes right—consistently.

What nursing taught me: consistency matters more than motivation

In healthcare, you don’t get to be “on” only when you feel like it. You show up tired. You show up stressed. You still perform.

So I built Bilge Brew for the people who live that reality: veterans, first responders, healthcare workers, and anyone who carries responsibility when nobody’s clapping.

Yes, I worked at Starbucks (and here’s what I took from it)

Working in a high-volume coffee environment teaches you two things fast: (1) most people just want something that tastes good every time, and (2) it’s easy for bad coffee to hide behind sugar, syrups, and marketing.

Note: Starbucks is a registered trademark of Starbucks Corporation. This story reflects my personal work experience and has no affiliation or endorsement.

What “veteran-owned coffee” means here

Some companies use military aesthetics. That’s not the same thing as being veteran-owned.

  • Veteran-owned: owned and operated by a veteran.
  • Standards: no shortcuts, no drama, coffee you can depend on.
  • Service: real support when customers reach out (not bots and canned replies).

We sell online (and we’re transparent about fulfillment)

Bilge Brew is an online coffee company. We use a fulfillment partner to keep shipping reliable and consistent. We don’t hide that. What we control is what matters: the coffee selection, the standards, and the customer experience.
